Colusa County Sheriff’s Department Investigates Shooting Death of Deer Hunter

For Immediate Release

August 30, 2016

On Sunday, August 28, 2016 at about 9:00am, the Colusa County Sheriff’s Department was informed of a victim who had been accidentally shot while deer hunting by hunting partner in the remote, mountainous area of western Colusa County.
Colusa County Deputies, along with personnel from the Indian Valley Fire Department, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Enloe Flight Care, and a CHP helicopter from Redding responded to the area. The victim was located in an area south west of Letts Lake off Forest Service Road 17N10, in an area referred to as Summit Valley.
While Fire personnel treated the victim and prepared him for air transport, the victim succumbed to his injuries of a single gunshot wound. The victim was identified as Rigoberto Mendoza, 52, from Colusa. The involved shooter, also from Colusa and victim are known to each other and were in the same area at the time the incident occurred.
The shooting incident and resulting death is still under investigation by the Colusa County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Fish & Wildlife.
